HOUSE OF HOSKINS
April Hoskins was born November 21, 1978 in
Three Rivers, MI. She spent her childhood as a military brat on bases in Hawaii and Kentucky.
During her teenage years
she lived in Scotts, MI. outside of Kalamazoo, MI. During her late teens she met the poet James Schwartz, becoming his “fag
hag” and best friend.
In 2000 she helped Schwartz prepare for Brothers Beta Club’s Closet Ball Pageant
for which he won an honorary 2000 K.E.Y. [Kalamazoo Entertainer of the Year] Award.
From 2000-2002 Hoskins worked backstage
at Brothers Beta Club and The Zoo Bar in Kalamazoo helping performers get ready for drag shows and pageants. Hoskins + Schwartz
both resided with famed drag legend Chelsea Del Ray, Hoskins having an asexual love affair with Miss Carmen Sandiego (aka
Scotti Moore).
Hoskins herself took to the stage in 2001’s “LaTasha Black Show” at The Zoo which
Schwartz later scribed in his poem April’s Song (from The Scarlet Band and Other Poems). Between clubbing on the Kalamazoo
gay scene Schwartz and Hoskins both wrote poetry, editing a ‘zine titled The Zoo Review and filling it with gossip tidbits
and their poetry.
In 2001 Schwartz + Hoskins moved to Sarasota, FL. And since 2002 Hoskins has resided in Jacksonville,
FL. With her partner Bryan Stafford and their two children Alexander and Rebecca.
Hoskins is the author of the e-book
Hushed Words and Poisoned Pens: A Body of Work by P.W. Cherish, has made a 2 poem cameo appearance in Schwartz’s 2004
poetry chapbook A James Schwartz Reader and makes her official literary debut with True Spoken Lies alongside Schwartz’s
Everything Redone in 2008.
JAMES' SONATA NEW!
I have walked with you on moonless nights
When the darkness was overwhelming.
I have held you cherished in my arms
When your heart was raw and aching
I have watched you grow from boy to man
And stood aside to let you shine
I have called you my dearest love
and am honored to call you my friend
I have weathered your raging storms
And kept a light on to guide you home.
I have seen you dance and watched you fall
But I never let you crash.
I tell my children of you often
But to them it's like a fairy tales.
How do I make them understand this love
So strong yet at times so frail
The miles seperate us now but I'm still near
Nothing could tear us apart, love precivers.
At times, I have stood in the shadows
Because I know you needed the light.
But if you ever turn around dear
I'll be by your side.
